On May 29, 2023, for the purpose of in-depth study and implementation of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era and Xi Jinping Thought on Diplomacy, a seminar on the theory of “Chinese Path to Modernization and New Model for Human Progress” was held at Nanjing University Xianlin Campus. The seminar was sponsored by the Research Center for Xi Jinping Thought on Diplomacy, the Study Times and the Research Center for Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era in Jiangsu Province, and organized by the Nanjing University Base of the Research Center for Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era in Jiangsu Province and the School of International Studies, Nanjing University. More than ten famous experts and scholars attended the seminar, including Xu Bu, Secretary General of the Research Center for Xi Jinping Thought on Diplomacy and President of the China Institute of International Studies, Zhao Jinsong, Vice Minister of the Propaganda Department of the Jiangsu Provincial Party Committee, Director of the Provincial Government Information Office and Deputy Director of the Research Center for Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era in Jiangsu Province, Yang Zhong, Executive Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of Nanjing University, Deputy Director of the Research Center for Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era in Jiangsu Province and Executive Director of the Nanjing University Base, Yang Jiemian, Director of the Academic Advisory Committee of Shanghai Institute for International Studies, Wang Fan, President of the Foreign Affairs Institute, Pu Shi, Deputy Editor-in-chief of the Study Times, and Wu Zhicheng, Deputy Director of the Institute for International Strategic Studies of the Party School of the Central Committee of the C.P.C.
In his welcomeing speech, Yang Zhong said that Nanjing University attaches great importance to the research and interpretation of i Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, and will rely on the School of Marxism, the Department of Philosophy, the School of Business and the School of International Studies to continuously strengthen the academic interpretation, academic expression and public dissemination of the Party’s innovative theory.
Zhao Jinsong pointed out in his speech that to study Chinese path to modernization and the new model for human progress, it is necessary to accurately grasp the historical context, take the materialist view of history as the guide, constantly expand the global perspective, and fully explore the world significance of China’s modernization, and he hoped that experts and scholars would tell the story of Chinese modernization in Jiangsu.
The seminar focused on the major theoretical issues related to the Chinese path to modernization and the new model of human progress. Xu Bu stressed that it is thanks to General Secretary Xi Jinping personally taking control of the whole picture and his diplomatic thought that we can scientifically assess the overall development trend of the times, accurately grasp the new historical orientation of China’s development and promote the major country diplomacy with Chinese characteristics amidst the complicated chaos.
Yang Jiemian proposed that we should comprehensively understand the exploration and innovation of the interaction between Chinese path to modernization and global ecological governance from three aspects: the inspiration of global ecological practices to Chinese path to modernization, the theoretical progress of Chinese path to modernization and global ecological civilization, and the system construction of Chinese path to modernization and global ecological civilization.
Wang Fan believed that Chinese traditional culture is an important source of the new model for human progress, and that it is important to fully explore the essence of traditional culture, such as the holistic view, dialectical view and self-regulation, and combine it with Chinese modernization process and diplomatic practice to make greater contribution to the formation and development of the new model of human progress.
Wu Zhicheng pointed out that the Chinese path to modernization has created a new path of modernization in the world by adhering to eight principles, including adhering to the leadership of the Party, adhering to independent exploration, adhering to the national situation based on the huge size of the population, adhering to the common prosperity of all people, adhering to the coordination of material and spiritual civilization, adhering to the harmonious coexistence of man and nature, adhering to the road of peaceful development, and adhering to the exchange and mutual appreciation of civilizations.
Pu Shi said in her summary, that the philosophical and social science workers have the responsibility and obligation to be guided by Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, to explore the laws for Chinese path to modernization, to make great contributions to the research, interpretation and development of the Party’s innovative theory.
The experts also discussed important theoretical issues, such as the international communication expression of Chinese path to modernization, the civilizational view of China’s modernization, the modernization to promote common prosperity in the new pattern of opening up, the construction of Chinese path to modernization with high level of opening up, the values and historical view of Chinese path to modernization, the Chinese solution to create a better world, Xi Jinping Thought on Diplomacy and the solution to resolve the period of turbulent changes in the world in an in-depth discussion. In the afternoon of the same day, as a part of the theoretical siminar, the Innovation Forum on Security, Development and Civilization was held at the School of International Studies of Nanjing University to discuss in depth the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative and the Global Civilization Initiative.
During the theoretical siminar, an inauguration ceremony was held for the Nanjing University base of the Research Center of Xi Jinping Thought on Diplomacy (School of International Studies), which was jointly inaugurated by Xu Bu and Yang Zhong. As the first university research base named Research Center of Xi Jinping Thought on Diplomacy in China, the School of International Studies, Nanjing University will take this inauguration as an opportunity to further strengthen the construction of academic innovation and advisory services, and strive to become a model platform for the study of Xi Jinping Thought on Diplomacy. The theoretical research base of Nanjing University, the Research Center of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era in Jiangsu Province, the host of this theoretical siminar, was inaugurated on July 4, 2022.
