The School of International Studies holds a seminar on “Predicting the outcome of the 2024 Taiwan Election"

In order to comprehensively analyze and investigate the factors influencing the 2024 Taiwan leadership election and its results, the School of International Studies successfully held a seminar on “Outcome Prediction of the 2024 Taiwan Leadership Election” on October 8, 2023. More than 20 scholars and students from Tsinghua University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Renmin University of China, Xiamen University, Shanghai Institutes for International Studies, Shanghai Institute of East Asian Studies, Shanghai Institute of Taiwan Studies, and relevant departments of Nanjing University attended the seminar.

In his speech, Zhu Feng, Executive Dean of the School of International Studies, appreciated the experts and scholars for their support to the development and construction of the School. He pointed out that the Taiwan issue should be understood by sorting out the development and direction of the great power game between China and the U.S., and that the organization of this seminar is of great theoretical and practical significance to the understanding of the Taiwan issue.

Wu Weixu, Assistant Professor of Taiwan Research Institute, Tsinghua University, is the host of the first sub-seminar. Yan Anlin, Director of the Academic Committee of Shanghai Institutes for International Studies, Lin Gang, Director of the Center for Taiwan Studies at Shanghai Jiaotong University, Wang Hailiang, Director of Shanghai Institute of East Asian Studies, Wang Yingjin, Director of the Center for Cross-Strait Relations at Renmin University of China, and Wang Weinan, Executive Deputy Director of the Center for Taiwan Studies of Shanghai Jiaotong University, analysed and discussed in depth the factors that influenced the outcome of Taiwan’s leadership election on the topic of “U.S. Influence on the Election of the Leader in Taiwan” “External Factors Affecting Taiwan’s Election in 2024”, “Taiwan’s Election Trends against the backdrop of  China-US Relations”, “The Judgment and Reaction of the United States to China’s Reunification Policy”, and “Using Russia as a Lesson for Stabilization and Progress to solidly advance China's reunification” respectively.

Zhang Meng , Assistant Researcher of Taiwan Research Institute of Nanjing University, is the host of the second sub-seminar. Yin Cunyi, Professor of Taiwan Research Institute of Tsinghua University, Liu Xiangping, Director of Taiwan Research Institute of Nanjing University, Ni Yongjie, Director of Taiwan Research Institute of Shanghai, and Ji Ye, Associate Dean of Taiwan Research Institute of Xiamen University, engaged in brilliant interpretation and lively discussion centered on the island’s factors affecting the results of the 2024 Taiwan leader election on the topic of “Analysis of Economic Influential Factors in the Election in Taiwan,” “Motivations, Obstacles, and Prospects of ‘Blue-White Cooperation’ Motivations, Obstacles and Prospects”, “Analysis of the Prospects of ‘Blue-White Cooperation’”, “Influencing Factors of the 2024 Taiwan Leadership Election” respectively.

Professor Lin Gang, representing the participating experts, summarized the seminar. He pointed out that the experts interpreted the internal and external factors affecting the election results of Taiwan’s leaders from different angles and exchanged diverse views, and that the brainstorming and collision of ideas helped to promote academic exchange and common progress.
